Part 1. What is DVD Region Codes?
DVD region codes is a DRM technique designed to allow motion picture studios to control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and especially, price, according to the region. DVD video discs may be encoded with a region code restricting the area of the world in which they can be played. The commercial DVD player specification requires that a player to be sold in a given place not play discs encoded for a different region.
Discs without region coding are called “all region” or “region 0″ discs. In addition, many DVD players can be modified to be region-free, allowing playback of all discs. There are six different regions on the DVD, while Blu-ray Disc only has three. Also, major DVD player manufacturer countries (Japan, United States etc.) all have different regions, which caused problems for many. This is fixed in Blu-ray, as Japan (and other East Asian countries) and the Americas all have the same region.
There are altogether 6 different Regions:
region 1: North America; U.S. territories; Bermuda
region2: Europe; Western Asia; Kingdom of the Netherlands; Egypt, Japan, Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland; British overseas territories, French overseas territories; Greenland
region 3: East and Southeast Asia
region 4: Oceania; Central and South America; Caribbean; Mexico
region 5: Africa, Central and South Asia, Belarus, India, Mongolia, North Korea, Russia, Ukraine
region 6: Mainland China
Part 2. Two Methods to Play Different Regions DVD on your Computer
1. Change the region code setting of your computer.
You just have 5 chances to change the region code (Your DVD drive is automatically locked to the region code of the first DVD it is used with. From then on, this can only be changed four more times.). And this “how to play DVD on Mac Lion” guide will show you how to play DVD using VLC player and how to remove DVD region protection.
2. Another method is using External Drive without changing the region codes.
To use the External Hard Drive, you do not need changing the region codes. And you can use a third party DVD Copy or Backup program to backup your different regions DVD.
Hard drives are usually internal, but as computer systems have evolved, different threats, needs and circumstances have arisen, additional external hard drives have become extremely important and popular.
Beside changing the region code, and using external hard drives, you still have other 2 options:
1. remove the region protection and make your DVD region free (region 0).
2. get a powerful DVD player that can play all region DVDs.
